Build a Reef Initiative

Build habitat. Restore the reef.

A Chola Divers initiative exploring artificial reef construction, coral restoration, biodiversity and long-term monitoring along the East Coast of Tamil Nadu.

The Initiative

Creating structure for marine life.

The project explores modular artificial reef structures designed to provide hard substrate and habitat while supporting marine biodiversity and future restoration work.

HABITAT

Create hard substrate.

Artificial structures can provide surfaces for marine organisms to colonise and create habitat complexity where suitable.

BIODIVERSITY

Support marine life.

Reef structures can provide shelter and feeding opportunities for fish and other marine organisms.

MONITORING

Measure change.

Survey and monitoring are intended to track development, biological concentration and reef health over time.

Deployment Model

Two stages from structure to living habitat.

STAGE 2

Develop in situ.

Modules are assembled at the site, with a floating natural feed platform intended to attract fish and plans for coral transplantation from nursery systems.

Ways to Support

Build something that lasts underwater.

Sponsor reef building

Support construction and deployment of artificial reef structures.

CSR partnerships

Corporate support can contribute to construction, conservation and long-term maintenance.

Research & monitoring

Support survey work including side-scan sonar monitoring and ecological assessment.

Future funding concepts include public grants, corporate partnerships and decentralised funding approaches.
